The Gmail toolbar has several buttons that you can use to take action on your messages. For example, use the buttons to delete a message or mark something as spam.

Some buttons, like Archive, Spam, and Labels, are collapsed until you need them. This means that they'll only show up if you've selected or opened a message.

Here's a guide to the button icons:

Archives a message
Mark as spam
Move the message to...
Delete
Label the message with...

Switching the way buttons are displayed

If you'd rather have buttons with text instead of the icons above, or vice versa, follow these steps:
  1. Open Gmail.
  2. Click the gear icon  in the upper right, then select Settings.
  3. In the "Button labels" section, select either Text or Icons.
  4. Click Save Changes once you've made your selection.
