Gmail is optimized for desktop and laptop touch devices. You can tap items with your finger where you would normally click - like starring a conversation, selecting a conversation from your inbox or adding an attachment.

With touch, you use the long press to show more actions. Below are a few places you can use a long press:

  • Chat
    • To open a contact card in the chat roster, long press on the individual and the contact card will appear.
  • Messages
    • To view more details on your message, go to the individual message and long press on the top of the message.
    • To see more information about one of your contacts, long press on their name or profile picture.

Opting in and out of touch mode
When you sign into Gmail from a touch-enabled device, you will see "Touch-enabled" as the selected density setting in the right corner under the gear.

Tap the gear icon  in the upper right corner of the Gmail page, then select Settings. To disable touch mode, just switch the density setting.
